We Can Celebrate Christmas Because He lives

Story Behind the Song Because He Lives

Because He Lives--The Gaither Trio1972

Years ago both Bill and Gloria will going through a tumultuous time in their lives in the late 1960's.  Both were English teachers who had majored in English and had taught high school for several years until 1967--when they both went into the singing ministry together.  Gloria Gaither was typically the writer to lyrics of the song while Bill set the lyrics to music.

During the late 1960's their third child was born.  Bill was struck with a case of mononucleosis.  It was a time of anguish and despair for Gloria.   Also, the 1960's was a tumultuous time with the rise of the hippie movement and the "God is Dead" movement.  Gloria was wondering why would anyone desire to bring a child into this crazy world?  Then she noted that a peace from the Holy Spirit calmed her fears and she realized that you don't bring children into this world because it's stable.  You bring a child into the world regardless how the social atmosphere is in our nation and the world.  The reason why you bring children into this world is "Because He Lives."

In a few weeks we'll be celebrating Christmas.  Many in Christendom will be celebrating the birth of Christ, which is what Christmas is all about.  It's about the time when Jesus was born into this world through the Virgin Mary, who knew no man.  She was impregnated by the Holy Ghost.  The Wise Men came to seek him to worship him.  They presented him gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh.  Then an angel of the Lord told Joseph to take his family and flee into Egypt because Herod had sought to kill baby Jesus.

Christmas is the time of year when we celebrate the birth of Christ.  But if the only thing significant during the Christmas season is Jesus' birth, then his birth wouldn't have been any more significant than any other historical figure if it all ended with Jesus being born on earth.  On the other hand, if all we could say was that Jesus lived on this earth a sinless life, died upon the cross, and that was the end, then that wouldn't had much significance to it.  However, the very fact that Jesus not only died on the cross, but rose again from the grave and is seated on the right hand of the Father, (Hebrews 8:2) signifies that He is alive and lives forevermore.  It's because He's alive today is the reason why we celebrate Christmas.  Christmas is not just about Christ's birth.  It's about a child that's born that will one day die on an old rugged cross and will rise from the grave.  He's seated at the right hand of the father and we have power through Christ.  Christmas and Easter wouldn't be any different than any of the other days set aside to celebrate the life of a particular person that once lived on earth.  But Jesus rose again and conquered hell and the grave.  As a result of that, HE's alive.  And because he lives, we celebrate Christmas, looking forward to day when he would make that sacrifice on Calvary's cross for the sins of mankind.  Because He Lives, we have the opportunity for life which happens through the new birth.  Because He Lives, we can live a victorious life upon this earth as a Christian.  Because He Lives, we have a home in Heaven when he raptures the saints out of this world.  (I Thessalonians 4:13-18)  Life is worth a living just because He Lives.

God Sent His Son, They Called Him Jesus
He came to love, heal, and forgive
He lived to die and buy my pardon
An Empty Grave is There to Prove My Saviour Lives
