A triumphant Vladimir Putin after winning the Russian presidency

On Sunday March 4, 2012, Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin triumphed in Russia's presidential election with tears rolling down his cheeks, calling his victory a turning point that had prevented Russia from falling into the hands of enemies.  Putin's opponents complained about widespread fraud and said they would refuse to recognize the results.  The former KGB spy said he won a "clean" victory and was on course to return to the Kremlin after four years as Prime Minister with almost 65% of the votes, according to partial results.  Two exit polls showed Putin with 58 to 59% of the votes and incomplete votes showing him winning with more than 64 percent.

Putin's victory places him back into the Russian presidency for the first time since 2008.  He was president for eight years before he was appointed Prime Minister of Russia on May 8, 2008.  Putin was barred from a third presidential term by the Russian constitution.  Therefore, he was succeeded by Dmitry Medvedev that year.  To read the full story about Sunday's election, click on the above link from Reuters.
