Rick Santorum scored victories in the Deep South which are both Alabama and Mississippi on Tuesday evening. It will at least ensure the campaign will drag on for a little while. As far as the delegate count goes, Mitt Romney is still 200+ points ahead of Rick Santorum. Even with the wins in Alabama and Mississippi, Santorum didn't gain anything on Romney. As of Wednesday morning, the delegate count stands like this: Romney 495, Santorum 252, Newt Gingrich 131, and Ron Paul with 48. That is the delegate count as of present. Romney didn't go home empty-handed because the two states divided their delegates proportionally and he clinched a victory in the Hawaii caucuses by a wide margin. Romney took home 45 percent of the state's vote with 52 percent of the state's delegates. Santorum trailed with 25 percent of the vote and 23 percent of the delegates. Romney also won the small Republican caucus in American Samoa. He picked up all nine delegates in that particular contest. American Samoa is a U.S. territory located 23,000 miles south of Hawaii. The next election will take place with the Missouri caucuses this Saturday. In February there was a nonbinding primary in Missouri where voters gave Santorum the edge. With Tuesday's contests completed, the nominating process is now at the halfway point.
