NewsDaily: Beshear touts tax overhaul, expanded gambling
Kentucky Governor Steve Beshear
Anytime you hear Kentucky Governor Steve Beshear use the phrase, "tax overhaul", those are buzz words for further tax increases. Kentuckians pay enough taxes as it is. Beshear speaks about the need for more revenue to cover education and health care, for example. One method that would help would be to eliminate wasteful spending in our state budget. I'm certain there's plenty of pork that can be eliminated in our state budget. Another idea would be for the state of Kentucky to become more business friendly to allow more private sector jobs to be created. If the private sector grows in Kentucky, then there'll automatically be revenue going to the state. We don't need further tax increases nor expanded gambling. The lottery hasn't raised the revenue we needed and casinos won't help either. I remember all the campaign promises by the late Governor Wallace Wilkinson when he ran for governor in 1987 that the lottery would raise the revenue needed for Kentucky's educational system. It's been 27 years since and the lottery doesn't seem to be sufficient for revenue. Casino gambling won't be either. Somebody will take that money and place it into their pockets.
