Ways and Means to IRS: ‘Provide All Communications Containing Words ‘Tea Party,’ ‘Patriot,’ or ‘Conservative’—By Wednesday | CNS News
House Ways and Means Committee Chairman Charles Boustany (R-LA)
The House Ways and Means Subcommittee on oversight has thrown down an investigative gauntlet to the Internal Revenue Service, demanding that the agency hand over this coming Wednesday every communication in its records which contain the words "tea party", "patriot", or "conservative." The committee is also demanding of the IRS that it provide the committee with the names and titles of individuals who were involved in targeting conservative non-profit groups for more intensive review of the applications for non-profit status. The request followed from a report from Friday from the Associated Press that Lois Lerner, director of the IRS Exempt Organizations Division, said at an American Bar Association conference that the IRS targeted for special review applications of non-profit groups that included the word "tea party" or "patriot". The AP quoted Lerner as saying, "That was wrong. That was absolutely incorrect, it was insensitive and inappropriate. That's not how we go about selecting cases for further review." Lerner said the IRS would like to apologize for that.
I wouldn't be surprised if the both the White House and Congress are behind the IRS targeting the Tea Party. Many times the blame is placed on the IRS but the Senate tells them what to do. I wouldn't be surprised if it was a liberal member of Congress that told the IRS to target Tea Party groups. It wouldn't surprise me at all. The Democrats in Congress as well as some Republicans would like to see the Tea Party's influence become marginalized. Therefore, I'm not surprised the IRS has been targeting the Tea Party.
