Tamyra Mensah-Stock: Proud to Represent America in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics

Tamyra Menas-Stock: Proud to Represent America

Mensah-Stock, El American

It is really refreshing to see an American athlete in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics proud to represent America. Within the past 2 years, we've been seeing athletes at sporting events bend the knee during the playing of the national anthem.  On Tuesday, American athlete and world champion wrestler Tamyra Mensah-Stock received a gold medal in the 68kg freestyle category after her 4-1 victory over Nigeria's Blessing Oborududu.

After her incredible performance in the ring, Mensah-Stock said she was "happy and proud" to represent the United States in the olympics.  The 28-year old athlete drew a a heart with her fingers with tears of emotion.  She had the American flag draped over her shoulder.  She told the reporter that she loved representing the U.S.  She stated she loved living in the USA and she was so glad to represent the U.S. in the olympics.

I really enjoyed hearing about Mensah-Stock on the news the other day.  It's so great to see an athlete that loves America and is proud to represent the country in which she lives.  Does that mean America has no problems and that we shouldn't protest?  No.  However, there's a time and place for protesting.  And that shouldn't be taking place in sporting events such as the olympics.  At the olympics, we are there to represent our country.  As many flaws as America may have, I don't believe you will find a country greater than America.  I believe many of these people who don't like America stay in America because they don't know of another country which is suitable for them to live.  We have so much to be thankful for in America.  It really is soul-stirring to see a black athlete that loves America and is proud to represent her in the olympics.  I'm sure there are many things she probably doesn't agree with in America, but she's thankful to live in America.  This is one of the most inspiring stories I've read thus far in this year's summer olympics.

Baylor Team Praises God After First NCAA Championship Win

On Monday April 5, 2021, Baylor University won their first NCAA championship defeating an undefeated Gonzaga team by the score of 86-70.  The private Christian college thanked God as they stood in a circle on the court after the game.  The win came a year after the 2020 NCAA tournament was cancelled due to the Covid pandemic.  The Bears Jared Butler won the NCAA Final Four most valuable player award.  Baylor's head coach Scott Drew praised his team for the hard work they exhibited during the run to the championship game.

It's great to see a team giving praise to God after winning a game.  Within the last year we've seen teams kneeling during the national anthem to protest the killing of George Floyd last year on May 27.  It's great to see a team giving thanks to God for their accomplishments.  It's great to see some positive news in the sports world.

UCONN Defeats Kentucky

UConn wins its fourth national championship defeating Kentucky 60-54.

UCONN Defeats Kentucky

Starting with the postseason tournament in SEC play, Kentucky has traveled an incredible journey. Who would've thought that Kentucky would play for the national championship last Monday night when you consider that Kentucky had a disappointing regular season in the SEC.  Not many people were expecting Kentucky to make much of a run.  Kentucky was reminding me of last year's team.  Then they started making a run in the SEC tournament by defeating LSU, Georgia, and narrowly losing to Florida in the championship game.  Then in the NCAA Midwest Regional, Kentucky defeated Kansas State, Wichita State, Louisville, Michigan, and Wisconsin to play Connecticut in the championship game on Monday April 7, 2014.  Even though they lost to Connecticut, Kentucky's future looks promising next year with the incoming recruits and possibly some of this year's freshmen to be a national contender once again next season.

Louisville Beats Michigan to Capture Third National Title

Michigan Wolverines vs. Louisville Cardinals - NCAA Tournament Game - Recap - April 08, 2013 - ESPN

The Cardinals celebrating their third national championship with an 82-76 win over Michigan

Louisville was down 12 points at one point in the first half, but Junior Luke Hancock emerged from the bench once again to score 22 points to propel Louisville to its third national championship.  This is Louisville's first championship in 27 years.  This year's Louisville team had great chemistry.  They played well together and fought back every time they were in a hole.  They definitely did that during Saturday's game against Wichita State and last night's game against Michigan.  Peyton Siva had 18 points against Louisville and he showed spectacular leadership in this game.  Chane Behanan scored 15 points and had 12 rebounds.  Even though he didn't play, injured teammate Kevin Ware was at the game.  His teammates made no secret that they wanted to win this game for him.  Following the game, Ware cut down a strand of the net.

This was Michigan's first time in a national championship game since 1993 when that team was led by Fab Five Chris Webber.  That team lost to North Carolina that year.  Trey Burke led all scorers at Michigan with 24 points.  Even though Michigan is a young team, they have tremendous talent and they can shoot the 3-point shot very well.  I wouldn't be surprised if they play in next year's national championship game against the University of Kentucky, who has the top recruiting class coming into next year's basketball season.

I want to congratulate the Louisville Cardinals on their 3rd national championship.  They played well together throughout the season.  That's what made the difference in this year's national champion.  When the going was tough, they didn't fold.  They were determined to win and they always found a way to win, esp. after the five overtime loss to Notre Dame earlier during the conference season.  Since that loss, Louisville won sixteen straight to win the national championship.  Louisville also won a season high 35 games this year.  The previous record high wins were in 1980, when Louisville won 33 games to win the national championship, and 33 in 2005 when Louisville went to the Final Four that year.

Taking a Look at the University of Louisville's Two Previous Championships

Sometime past 9:00 p.m. EST this evening the University of Louisville Cardinals will contend for their third national championship.  This is the first time that the Louisville Cardinals have a chance for a national championship since 1986.  Louisville will play Michigan this evening.  In the previous two championship matchups Louisville played UCLA in 1980.  That team was led by Senior Darrell Griffith.  They beat UCLA 59-54.  In 1986 Louisville beat Duke for the national title by the score of 72-69.  Freshmen Pervis Ellison led the Cardinals with 25 points and 11 rebounds.

Both of the championship Cardinal teams were coached by Denny Crum.  During his 30-year career at Louisville, Crum took the Cardinals to the Final Four six times and won the national championship two times.  This year's Louisville team is coached by Rick Pitino.  In his twelve years in his helm at Louisville, he's taken them to the Final Four three times.  This is his first year there he has a chance to win the national championship.  Here's a look at the previous two championship games Louisville played in 1980 and 1986.

Louisville's Ware has Surgery After Fracturing Leg During NCAA Game

Louisville's Ware has surgery after fracturing leg during NCAA game | Fox News

Kevin Ware

Louisville guard Kevin Ware, whose right leg was broken during the Midwest Regional championship game between Louisville and Duke, had surgery and is now resting comfortably.  The surgery took two hours.  Ware is expected to stay in Indianapolis at least until Tuesday.  Ware landed awkwardly, with his right leg bending at almost a right angle, after he contested a shot during the first half of the game on Sunday.  His teammates wept openly as he was taken on a stretcher to the Methodist hospital.  Even as he was being treated on court, he told his teammates at least 10 times to win the game.  Louisville guard Russ Smith heard the break, which was very gruesome.  Rick Pitino, Louisville head coach said it was the same type of injury that Louisville running back Michael Bush had in football.  The injury took place right in front of the Pitino bench.  Many of those players, such as Wayne Blackshear, were overcome with emotion.

Louisville Cardinals vs. Florida Gators - Recap - January 02, 2013

Louisville Cardinals vs. Florida Gators - Recap - January 02, 2013 - ESPN

The University of Louisville and the University of Florida battle it out in the Sugar Bowl on January 2, 2013.

The University of Louisville football team defeated the University of Florida Gators in a stunning upset yesterday by a score of 33-23.  The University of Louisville had the ninth softest schedule in the nation.  Florida had the toughest schedule in the nation.  On paper, the Florida Gators should've defeated the Cardinals.  However, games are played on the field--not on paper.  Teddy Bridgewater, Louisville's quarterback, led the charge.  Way to go Cardinals.

Penn State Fined $60 Million, Hit With Harsh Penalties

Penn State fined $60M, Paterno's wins vacated from 1998-2011 | Fox News

Yesterday the NCAA imposed some very harsh penalties on Penn State following former assistant coach Jerry Sandusky's conviction of molesting young boys for a number of years.  Penn State's football program was all but dismantled by the NCAA ruling which wiped away former head coach Joe Paterno's victories from 1998 until last year and imposed a mountain of fines and penalties.  The sanctions by the governing body imposed unprecedented fines of $60 million, ordered Penn State to sit out of postseason play for four years, capped scholarships at 20 below the normal limit for four years and placed football on five years probation.  Current or incoming football players are free to immediately transfer and compete at another school.

By vacating 112 Penn State victories from 1998-2011, the sanctions cost Paterno 112 wins.  Former Florida State Coach Bobby Bowden will be credited with the most victories--377 major college wins.  Paterno, who was fired from Penn State days after Sandusky was charged, now is credited with 298 wins.  It's a sad day in college football for Penn State.  But maybe it will teach other major college football programs that covering up the sins of a pedophile will be very costly, and rightly so.  To read the full story about Monday's latest ruling from the NCAA, click on the above link from FoxNews.com.

Longtime Tennessee Women's Pat Summit Steps Down

Pat Summitt steps down at Tennessee - chicagotribune.com

Summitt steps down

Former Tennessee head coach Pat Summitt

Longtime Tennessee women's head coach Pat Summit has decided to step down from the program due to the early onset of dementia which she announced to the public in August 2011.  Even though she's stepping aside from drawing plays and calling timeouts during the game, she won't be out of the basketball arena altogether.  She will remain with Tennessee as "head coach emeritus" where she'll be a liasion between the basketball program and athletic department.  She will remain involved with on-campus recruiting and continue to interact with members of the program.  Summit, who turns 60 in June, will hand over the reins to longtime assistant Holly Warlick, who's been an assistant at Tennessee since 1985.  Warlick also played on Summitt's first Tennesee team.

Pat Summitt has been the face of women's college basketball ever since women's sports has been revitalized with Richard Nixon's signing of Title IX, which allowed girls and women to play sports in high school and college.  Summit, who was know as Pat Head when she first became the women's head coach at Tennessee, has had a very successful career at the school.  She's the all-time winningest coach of both men and women.  Summitt ends her career with a record 1098 wins, two shy of 1100.  She had 208 losses.  She has won eight national titles in her 38 year career for the Lady Vols.  She won back-to-back championships on two different occasions, the first time from the years 1996-98.  In 1998 the Lady Vols had a 39-0 undefeated championship season.  They won back-to-back titles the second time from 2007-08.  2008 was the last year Summitt won a national championship.  She has also competed in more Final Fours in NCAA history than any particular coach.  In 2002 she surpassed former UCLA head coach John Wooden in all time Final Four appearances.  She was a player on the 1976 U.S. Olympic team that won a Silver medal in Montreal.  She was a coach of the 1984 team that won Gold in Los Angeles.

Kentucky Wins NCAA Title No. 8

NCAA Basketball: Kentucky Wildcats Have the Horses, Top Kansas Jayhawks in Tournament Final - WSJ.com

Kentucky wins crop.jpg
Kentucky players celebrate following their championship victory against Kansas on Monday April 2, 2012.

The Kentucky Wildcats have done it again.  They have won eight NCAA titles--only second to UCLA.  UCLA has a total of 11 NCAA titles.  Kentucky won their first NCAA title for the first time since 1998 when Kentucky under then first year head coach Tubby Smith defeated Utah 78-69 in the championship game that year.  The victory gives Kentucky Coach John Calipari his first NCAA title after leading three teams to the Final Four during his coaching tenure: Massachusetts, Memphis, and Kentucky.  (The Final Fours at Massachusetts and Memphis were vacated due to NCAA sanctions).  Calipari won a national championship with a squad that consisted of mostly freshmen.  The squad also featured two sophomores in Terrence Jones and Doron Lamb and one senior, Darius Miller from Maysville, Kentucky.  Kentucky's superior freshmen consisted of Anthony Davis, Marquis Teague, Michael Kidd-Gilchrist, and Kyle Witljer.  Davis is the first UK player to be awarded the Naismith trophy for college player of the year on Sunday.  Davis is the second freshman to win the Naismith trophy.  Texas's Kevin Durant was the first freshman to win it in 2007.

Kentucky defeated Kansas for the title 67-59.  The title game against Kansas was Kentucky's second rematch with them.  Kentucky played Kansas in the second game of the year on November 15, 2011 and won 75-65 in a classic tipoff game in New York.  Kansas was one of three rematches that Kentucky played in the NCAA tournament this year.  In the Sweet Sixteen Kentucky played a rematch with Indiana, which was the only team that Kentucky lost to during the regular season.  In the national semifinals, Kentucky won a rematch with Louisville.

Even though Anthony Davis, the national player of the year was scoreless in the first half, he was still a force on both ends of the floor.  He had nine rebounds, four assists, and three blocks.  Throughout the first half and part of the second half, Kentucky had a double-digit lead over Kansas.  In the second half Kansas clawed its way back to within five points, but they could never come closer.  Kentucky was definitely the superior team and the team to beat in the NCAA tournament.  Congratulations to a job well done to the Kentucky Wildcats.

All five starters (which include three freshmen and two sophomores) are expected to enter the NBA draft in June.  To read the full story on WSJ.com.

Louisville Reaches Final Four, Beats Florida In Elite Eight With Amazing Comeback

Louisville Reaches Final Four, Beats Florida In Elite Eight With Amazing Comeback

Louisville Final FourRuss Smith #2 of the Louisville Cardinals shoots over Erving Walker #11 of the Florida Gators of the first half in the 2012 West Regional Final in the NCAA basketball tournament.  The game was played in Phoenix, Arizona.

Louisville players holding up trophy after winning the West Regional.

Louisville has had an incredible post-season tournament.  When you consider the array of injuries many of Louisville's players had experienced this season including their inconsistent offense, it's amazing they even made it to the NCAA Tournament much less to the Final Four.  Louisville began their season with a 12-0 record.  Even though they started out with that record, they were battling inconsistencies in their offense in such games as Ohio University, Western Kentucky University, and Vanderbilt, to name a few.  When they began their conference season on December 28, 2011, they lost their first game to Georgetown.  For the next two months, they lost eight more games.  Eight out of nine games were in the Big East Conference.  The only non-conference game Louisville lost was to Kentucky on New Year's eve.

Prior to Louisville's amazing post-season run, Louisville had lost the last two regular season conference games to South Florida and Syracuse.  Louisville lost to South Florida on Senior night at home and Louisville lost their season finale at Syracuse.  Following their last regular season game, Louisville went on an 8-0 run winning the Big East Conference Tournament for the first time since 2009.  They edged out Cincinnati in the conference tournament final.  Then in the West Regional Louisville defeated Davidson, New Mexico, Michigan State, and Florida.  Who would've thought Louisville would defeat #1 seed Michigan State and Florida Saturday.  Florida had a team with three players who were excellent shooting beyond the three-point arc.  Going into Saturday's game, it appeared it would be difficult for Louisville to defeat them.

For 32 minutes of the game, Florida outplayed Louisville.  They outshot Louisville.  They hit several three pointers in the first half.  After a technical foul was called against Rick Pitino and the Cardinals were down by 11, they made an amazing run.  As the game expired, Louisville won by four points 72-68.

Louisville will play the winner of the South Regional on Saturday which is Kentucky-Baylor.  Click on the Huffington post to read the story about the game.

Joe Paterno, Former Penn State Football Coach, Dies at 85

Joe Paterno, former Penn State football coach, dies at 85 - The Washington Post

Former Penn State Head Football Coach Joe Paterno

Former legendary Penn State Head Coach Joe Paterno, who won more football games than any college coach, died this past Sunday January 22, 2012 at the age of 85.  Prior to his death, he was fired amid a child sex abuse scandal that marred his reputation and legacy as the winningest football coach for the university.  The Pennsylvania hospital where Paterno died confirmed the death as a spreading lung cancer.  Mount Nittany Medical Center said in a statement that Paterno died at 9:25 a.m. Sunday of "metastic small cell carcinoma of the lung."  Paterno built his program on the credo "Success With Honor" and he found both.  The man known as "JoPa" won 409 games and took the Nittany Lions to 37 bowl games and 2 national championships.  More than 250 players he coached went to the NFL.  He coached at Penn State for 46 years.

According to Reuters, Joe Paterno was buried yesterday in a private ceremony after thousands of mourners paid their vigil in frigid weather as his hearse was carried from a closed funeral.  Paterno was fired in November 2011 after his former assistant, Jerry Sandusky, was charged with serial sex abuse.  Paterno was fired because he didn't tell police what he had been told about the alleged abuse.  To read more about the former head football coach's death, click on the above link from The Washington Post.

UCONN Wins National Championship/The Summation of UK's 2010-11 Season

(USA Today April 5, 2011) On Monday evening third-seeded Connecticut defeated eigth seeded Butler for the national title Monday evening.  Kemba Walker, a 6-1 All-American from Bronx, NY, steered a young Connecticut team that started the season unranked all the way to the NCAA title game vs. Butler on Monday night at Reliant Stadium in Houston.  Connecticut won the title 53-41, handing Butler it's second straight NCAA championship game loss.  Bulter lost to Duke last year 71-69 for the national title.  It was a very low-scoring game.  The Bulldogs (28-10), were held to a title record low 18.8% shooting.  Connecticut's records is 32-9.  Connecticut won it's third national championship under Coach Jim Calhoun.  UCONN won two other titles in 1999 and 2004.  Kemba Walker was named the Final Four's most outstanding player.

I rarely write posts on sports stories, but I do like to recap whenever Kentucky or Louisville achieves a milestone in the NCAA tournament.  Kentucky earned their victory to the first Final Four since 1998 when they beat Utah 78-69 on March 30, 1998.  Even though they lost to Connecticut by a single point, 56-55 in the national semifinal, the Wildcats still had a good season overall considering their struggles during the SEC regular season conference.  During the regular season, the Wildcats lost 6 out of 8 SEC road games.  The 2010-11 Kentucky Wildcats lost four freshmen (John Wall, DeMarcus Cousins, Daniel Orton, Eric Bledsoe), one junior (Patrick Patterson) one sophomore (Darnell Dodson) and one senior (Ramone Harris) from last year's team.  Kentucky had a splendid group of extraordinary freshmen who, in Coach Calipari's first season as Kentucky's head coach, transformed a mediocre, NIT Kentucky team the season before to a 35-3 season which lost to West Virginia in the regional finals last year.  Last year many fans had predicted Kentucky would've made it to the Final Four under John Wall and UK's extraordinary freshmen.  UK's freshmen that year meshed well and had great depth.  This year's team consisted of freshmen Brandon Knight, Doron Lamb, Terrence Jones, senior Josh Harrelson, and juniors Darius Miller and DeAndre Liggins.  One recruit UK counted on for this season, Enes Kanter, was declared ineligible early in the season and even after appealing, the request to reinstate Kanter's eligibility was denied.

This year's UK team didn't possess the depth like last year's team and this year's team was more susceptible to foul trouble.  Kentucky had to rely more upon Harrelson, Miller, and Liggins this season.  All three upperclassmen delivered.  Josh Harrelson had improved tremendously from last season to this season.  Harrelson should be nominated as the most improved player of Kentucky.  After losing to Arkansas, Kentucky regrouped and they started player together more as a team.  As a result, they won the SEC tournament championship and pulled off surprising upsets against no. 1 seeded Ohio State in the Sweet 16 and second-seeded North Carolina in the regional final.  Even though they fell to Connecticut for the second time in the Final Four (UK lost to Connecticut earlier this season in the championship game of the Maui Classic by 17 points), they still had a tremendous season.  Who expected UK to make it to the Final Four this season after losing Wall and Cousins from last year's team?  I didn't expect it.  They have much to be proud of this season considering this year's team wasn't quite the same caliber as last season.

If Kentucky retains some of this year's freshmen, I project that next season UK will be ranked in the preseason top five.  Kentucky should once again be a contender for the national title considering the class of freshmen coming next season.  The new freshmen coming to UK next season are Marquis Teague, Anthony Davis, Kyle Witljer, and Michael Gilchrist.

Kentucky's Bid to the Final Four Ends Against West Virginia

The University of Kentucky has had a remarkable season. With three freshmen starters along with Patrick Patterson, Darius Miller, Perry Stevenson, Ramone Harris, and sophomore newcomer Darnell Dodson, Kentucky posted a 35-3 record this season. Who would've ever thought it? Last year Kentucky missed the NCAA tournament for the first time in 18 years. Kentucky's former head coach Billy Gillespie failed to live up to the expectations that were set out for him. Last March, Athletic Director Mitch Barnhart fired Billy Gillespie and replaced with former Memphis coach John Calipari. When Calipari was first hired, he warned fans that things wouldn't turn around in one season. However, they had a very surprising season and far exceeded expectations with top-rated freshmen along with some upper classmen. They posted a 35-3 season overall. UK won 2000 games overall on December 21, 2009. They won both the SEC regular season championship outright and the SEC Tournament. They were chosen as the No. 1 seed in the East. Kentucky rolled over the first three opponents. Kentucky beat it's first two opponents by thirty points. When Kansas bowed out of the NCAA tournament, it appeared Kentucky would be the favorite to win this year's national championship. However, it didn't prove to be the case as West Virginia defeated Kentucky 73-66.

Da'Sean Butler and Joe Mazzulla both propelled West Virginia to its first regional victory since 1959 when West Virginia went to the Final Four under Jerry West. Kentucky had a 11-0 run at the beginning of the game, but Kentucky lagged all the second half and the latter part of the first half. Kentucky was down 28-26 at halftime. Mazzulla scored 17 points for West Virginia. West Virginia hit 8-three pointers in the first half and they were 0-22 making two-pointers. Sounds strange! Kentucky missed their first 20 3-point shots until DeAndre Liggins hit a 3-pointer with 3:29 left in the second half. West Virginia used a sagging defense against Kentucky. Kentucky shot horribly in the game. Kentucky made 4-32 from the 3-point line and didn't make their four 3-pointers until 3:29 left in the game. Kentucky hit very poorly from the foul line 16-29. Kentucky outrebounded West Virginia 29-13. John Wall led all scorers for Kentucky with 19 points and Cousins with 15 points.

Kentucky had a superb season overall. Even though they played a poor game, they don't have anything to be ashamed of. Kentucky has a great recruiting class following this year's class. There's speculation that John Wall, DeMarcus Cousins, and Patrick Patterson are headed for the NBA after this season. However, if Calipari and future Kentucky teams build upon this year's team, they will one day be in the Final Four and will one day take home a championship trophy.

Congratulations to the University of Kentucky in Winning 2000 All-Time Career Victories

As it's apparently evident, I don't write posts about sports. That's not the purpose of why I established this blog. However, whenever the occasion deems it noteworthy to mention a sports team or to mention about a particular sport, then I'll do so. Anytime I can draw some points and apply it to practical living in everyday life, I'll definitely take advantage of it. Today is one of those occasions. Anyone that keeps up-to-date with sports knows that the University of Kentucky Men's Basketball team defeated Drexel University 88-44 to become the first men's basketball team to win 2000 all-time career victories. Kentucky's record over 107 seasons is 2000-635-1. Defending national champion North Carolina Tarheels is a close second with 1992 victories and the University of Kansas is third with 1980 victories. That's a great accomplishment dating back from the UK's first game with the Lexington YMCA with a a 11-10 victory on February 18, 1903. The UK team that accomplished 2000 wins this year did so with first year coach John Calipari and his spectacular freshmen class which includes John Wall, DeMarcus Cousins, Eric Bledsoe, Daniel Orton, Jon Hood as well as the more experienced players consisting of Patrick Patterson, Ramone Harris, DeAndre Liggins, Darius Miller, and Perry Stevenson. If UK continues progressing like they have in the first twelves games of this basketball season, then I'll feature periodic posts about this team trying to expound upon some important qualities that this team possesses to practical living.

This was definitely a special moment at hand. There were many fans on hand such as former radio announcer Ralph Hacker, former UK head basketball coach Joe B. Hall, former Coach Adolf Rupp's son, former players Kenny "Sky" Walker Jamal Mashburn, to name a few. Also Kentucky Governor Steve Beshear was at hand to watch the game and the after-game festivities. According to Owensboro's Messenger-Inquirer, streamers showered the court moments after the final buzzer while players donned black T-shirts commemorating the occasion. The crowd was getting wild. "I saw stuff flying, we were just trying to enjoy ourselves," forward Josh Harrellson said. Kentucky had it's most dominant performance this season when it played Drexel last night. DeMarcus Cousins and Patrick Patterson scored 18 points apiece. Freshmen John Wall had 16 points and and seven assists. Following the game both Adolf Rupp's son and Joe B. Hall payed tribute to UK's 2000th win.

For weeks coach John Calipari had been downplaying Kentucky's pursuit of 2000 wins, saying his team needed to focus on improving, not making history. Calipari admitted it's pretty good when you can do both. "We weren't a part of many of those 2000 wins (but) we had a job to do and that was drag us across the line before that other blue team got there," referring to North Carolina as he was standing on the confetti-strewn floor at Rupp Arena. "This is a special program for this program and the state." Kentucky's rich and storied tradition began with Adolf Rupp when he was hired in 1930. As a coach, he won an NIT (precursor to the present NCAA tournament, and four national championships. On January 18, 1969, Kentucky won 1000 games beating SEC foe Tennessee on the road with the score of 69-66. Almost 41 years later on December 21, 2009, Kentucky won its 2000th game. Rupp was the all-time leading coach in the number of victories at UK with 875 wins from 1930-72. He was forced into retirement. He was in his 70's at that time. He was known for wearing brown suits while coaching. He had built a solid winning tradition at Kentucky which lasted for years to come. Since Rupp's departure, Kentucky's head coaches have been Joe B. Hall (1972-85), Eddie Sutton (1985-89), Rick Pitino (1989-97), Orlando G. "Tubby" Smith (1997-07), Bill Gillespie (2007-09), and current coach John Calipari (April 1, 2009 - present).

Kentucky overall has won seven NCAA champions in 1948-49, 1951, 1958, 1978, 1996, and 1998. Joe B. Hall won a national championship in 1978, Rick Pitino won a championship in 1996 and Tubby Smith won a championship in 1998. Kentucky has also won two NIT championships in 1946 and 1976. Kentucky has been to the final four numerous times. Kentucky has had quite a roster of noted players such as Ralph Beard, Cotton Nash, Cliff Hagan, Dan Issel, Pat Riley, Jack Givens, Sam Bowie, Melvin Turpin, Kevin Grevey, Kyle Macy, Kenny Walker, Rex Chapman, Winston Bennett, Jamal Mashburn, Walter McCarty, Antoine Walker, and Jodie Meeks, to name a few. I couldn't begin to scratch the surface in naming all their names. Dan Issel stands as the all-time leading scorer with 2138 points in three seasons at UK back in the sixties. During that time freshmen were ineligible to play.

There are numerous reasons for the 2000 victories Kentucky has won in 107 seasons. Some of the reasons are due to a strong work ethic, talented players, great coaches, the motivation to win because of UK's winning tradition etc. I want to briefly emphasize the other reason for UK's 2000 victories: teamwork. Kentucky over the years has played together as a team. When a sports team plays together as a team, you will win games. Teamwork is crucial. One of the daunting challenges Coach Calipari has had this season as the new head coach is trying to coach freshmen all-Americans such as John Wall, Eric Blesdoe, Daniel Orton, and DeMarcus Cousins for example. When a team consists of high school all-Americans, it can be very difficult to coach them. Many players that were great in their game such as scoring, rebounding, assists, etc. many times tend to think of their game in terms of their individual stats. They have a tendency to think of scoring "x" number of points in a game or "x" number of rebounds or assists. The individual sometimes has precedence over the team as a whole. That's one of the challenges that Calipari has had to deal with. So far this team is improving and meshing well together with each passing game. Calipari emphasizes the importance of team play. Instead of thinking in terms of individual performance, a player must think in terms of playing as a team. Basketball players must be willing to play unselfishly if they have a desire to win national championships. You don't win national championships by playing one-on-one the entire game. You don't win championships by individually trying to score the most points in a game. The players must play together as a team and pass the ball to one another. It's all about teamwork and making plays that will make your team better, regardless of your individual stats. That's one of the daunting challenges many college coaches have when they have high school All-American sports stars. It's very easy to think in terms of individual play instead of teamwork. You won't win very many games against top-ranked opponents unless your team knows how to play unselfish basketball and work together as a team. There's no other way around it.

That same principle of teamwork goes with other areas in life such as the workplace, organizations, churches, etc. Everybody that works for a business must understand that everybody has a certain role to fulfill and that everybody must work together as a team if that business is to thrive and prosper. Everybody can't think just in terms of self. Everybody must think in terms of how they can profit the business in which they work in. Our churches need members that think in terms of working together as a team when it comes to propagating the gospel as well as fulfill God's will for that local church. I've heard preachers say over the years that most of the work that's accomplished at church is accomplished by approximately 20% of the members. That's a crying shame. Everybody must learn to work together as a team. When you work together as a team, you become strong and it's very difficult to defeat a group of people that work together as a team. When a group of individuals don't work together and think only in terms of self, then little will be accomplished. Also, that group of individuals will be weak as well. However, when the church bands together and the members are willing to work together for the cause of Christ, Satan won't be able to defeat them. Teamwork is crucial. Teamwork not only applies to a sports team, but it also applies to any type of organization you're affiliated with in everyday life.

Rick Pitino's Sexual Tryst with Karen Sypher

University of Louisville men's basketball coach Rick Pitino held a public press conference Wednesday August 12, 2009 in regards to the allegations his longtime assistant's wife, Karen Sypher made about him. Pitino admitted he had a sexual encounter with Karen Sypher, wife of Tim Sypher at a Louisville restaurant after hours. She made the allegation that Pitino twice raped her, which police supposedly claims there's lack of evidence. The Louisville's Courier-Journal obtained a record of the police interview through the state's Open Records Act in which Pitino gave his side of the story. Pitino has sued Sypher charging that she's trying to extort $10 million from him.

Sypher was indicted by a federal grand jury for an extortion attempt and for lying to the FBI. She pleaded not guilty. Pitino hasn't been charged with any crime so far. After the tryst Pitino had with Sypher, she became pregnant. She told Pitino she didn't have health insurance and wanted to obtain an abortion. Pitino gave her $3000 for medical insurance. He claims it wasn't necessarily for abortion. Pitino's attorney Steve Pence claimed that Pitino thought the money was for medical insurance.

I remember Rick Pitino back in 1989 when he took over the University of Kentucky's basketball program that was mired in a recruiting scandal back then. He helped resurrect that program and turned it around. During his tenure at Kentucky, he took that team to three final fours and won an NCAA championship in 1996. He took over Louisville's program in 2001 and turned it around as well. He's taken Louisville to one final four and two elite eights in the NCAA tournament. He's a great coach. I've always admired his abilities to motivate players to play their best on the court. I had considered him a master motivator. However, given what he did, I believe he needs to resign as head coach. He did apologize to the players and fans and even to his family. However, he sat a bad example before his players and he hurt his own immediate family in the process. The worst part was his betrayal to his wife and children. Louisville's contract calls for terminating the contract of the coach for moral depravity and misconduct that damages the university's reputation. However, Louisville Athletic Director Tom Jurich and Louisville President James Ramsey both stand firmly behind Pitino. Even his recruits so far haven't changed their mind about playing basketball for Louisville next season.

Even though Rick Pitino labeled his encounter as an "indiscretion", adultery is adultery. There are some sins that can be committed and you can repent and ask forgiveness for and fellowship is restored. However, adultery is a sin against one's own body and that sin will haunt you all your life. A husband can be as repentant as he can be towards his wife and she could forgive him. However, repentance won't restore what's been lost with that kind of sin. His relationship with his wife won't ever be the same again. There's some things that saying "I'm sorry" doesn't restore. We still should repent regardless of what sin it is. However, some sins carry so much damage there's no way to restore the damage that's been done. When adultery's been committed, trust has been broken. There's been betrayal to the marriage vows. Repentance doesn't wipe away that reproach. Even if the wife forgives her husband, there's still that sense of mistrust and only time and faithfulness on the part of the unfaithful will help that if ever. That's how damaging adultery is to a marriage.

On top of the affair he had with Sypher, she became pregnant with his child and he gave her money for an abortion. He may claim that the money wasn't necessarily for abortion, but if she told him she wanted an abortion, he ought to know she would use the $3000 for an abortion. That's another sin--the taking of a life of an unborn child. That's another scar on his record. Sometimes a couple will "play" around and the woman will become pregnant and she will have an abortion to cover up their sin. There's numerous unintended consequences as a result of adultery.

Rick Pitino's conduct is a terrible example before his players and it's not good for the reputation of the university. Our world today doesn't think anything of adultery and fornication anymore. As long as a coach can win and generate revenue to the university's sports program, that's all that county. It's all about the ALMIGHTY DOLLAR!
