Dr. Hilary Koprowski, the pioneering virologist who developed the first successful oral vaccination for polio, died this past week at his suburban Philadelphia home at the age of 96. Even though he wasn't as well known as Jonas Salk and Albert Sabin, Koprowski in 1950 became the first to show it was possible to vaccinate against polio, the crippling but fatal disease that's all but eradicated.
