n U.S. Attorney General Loretta LynchThe Justice Department and the state of North Carolina both filed a dueling lawsuit over the transgender bathroom law. The Justice Department's lawsuit stated that the state of North Carolina was violating federal civil rights law concerning transgenders, gays, and lesbians, for example in using bathrooms that correspond with their birth certificates. Attorney General Loretta Lynch accused the state of North Carolina practicing discrimination against transgender people. North Carolina Governor Pat McCrory stated that the federal government engaged in "baseless and blatant overreach" in trying to get the policy scrapped.
