Senate Confirms Tillerson as Secretary of State
Secretary of State Rex Tillerson
The Senate voted 56-43 to confirm former Exxon-Mobil CEO Rex Tillerson as the 69th Secretary of State. This vote was close for this position. Some Republicans expressed concern over Tillerson's ties to Russia.
Also, the Senate moved closer to confirm Betty DeVos as the new Education Secretary. However, Alaska Senator Lisa Murkowski and Maine Senator Susan Collins stated they wouldn't voted for her in the full Senate vote. However, Vice-President Pence could break the tie to confirm DeVos. In today's meeting, the Senate Judiciary Committee voted 11-9 along party lines to bring the nomination of Jeff Sessions as Attorney General for the full Senate to vote on it. Senator Orrin Hatch also changed the Senate rules requiring the number of votes needed to confirm a nominee in order to speed up the process of President Trump's cabinet picks.
