Easter Sunday

(Galatians 6:14) "But God forbid that I should glory, save in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, by whom the world is crucified unto me, and I unto the world."  A few decades ago the late songwriter and singer Dottie Rambo penned the famous gospel song, "I will glory in the cross."  I really enjoyed that song when I first heard it sung.  Thank God for the inspiration she received to write that song.  We who are saved and know the Lord know that our boasting is in the Lord.  We recognize that as the Apostle Paul said in I Corinthians 15:10 I am what I am because of the grace of God.  Salvation is of the Lord.  Nobody can merit salvation.  Jesus paid it all on Calvary.  Salvation is a free gift.  Ephesians 2:8-9 says that we are saved by grace through faith.  It's the gift of work and not of works lest any man should boast (paraphrasing).  The grace of God teaches us that in Romans 7:18 there is no good thing that dwelleth in our flesh.

When man sinned, he took on the nature of Satan.  We had a nature that was at enmity against God. God sent his son to this world to pay the price on Calvary for us that we might be redeemed and reconciled to God.  There's an important point I must make:  When God saves us, it's only our soul that's saved--not our flesh.  These tabernacles that we dwell in are mortal.  One of these days when Christ comes for his bride this old flesh will be set aside and we'll put on new glorified immortal bodies.  These bodies that we presently reside in cause us trouble.  That doesn't mean we can't serve God with our bodies.  I'll explain that in just a little bit.

The reason why we struggle so much in the flesh is simply because the flesh is at enmity against God.  Paul mentioned how he struggled with his flesh in Romans.  He mentioned that the new man desires to live holy before God.  However, he had to battle with his flesh.  He said the spirit is willing but the flesh is weak.  Romans 8:13 says that through the Spirit we are to mortify the deeds of our flesh.  Our flesh must be crucified so we can be in subjection to God.  If we are going to serve God and fulfill His will for our lives, it's imperative these bodies be crucified.  If our flesh isn't crucified, it will create numerous problems in our service to God.  The reason why so many Christians today succumb to their flesh is because their flesh is out of control.  We feed our flesh with the things of the world and the world is at enmity against God.  As a result, it inhibits us from serving God with all our heart, mind, and soul.  You can't serve the Lord steadfastly being full of the world.  The Bible says you can't serve two masters.  We'll either serve God or mammon.  If we are going to serve God, then our flesh must be crucified.  It must be put to death.

I'm very thankful for God sending His son to this world.  I'm very thankful for Calvary.  I'm thankful for the Lord's willingness to present himself as the unspotted lamb before the world.  I'm thankful Jesus was obedient unto death.  I'm also thankful that Jesus arose from the grave as well.  Without the resurrection of Christ, there would be no salvation.  We wouldn't know eternal life.  We wouldn't know what the abundant life in Jesus holds for us.  I'm thankful that we have the privilege to remember and celebrate the Lord's death, burial, and resurrection.  I'm thankful Jesus is alive forevermore.  However, we don't have to limit our celebration of Jesus' death, burial, and resurrection during the Easter season.  The death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus should be celebrated 365 days a year.  We should always remember what Christ did for us.  Thank God Jesus isn't dead but is alive.  That's what makes Jesus different from all the other religious figures and gods of this world.  Buddha, Mohammad, and Allah are all dead.  They never rose from the grave.  Jesus is the only historical figure who rose from the grave.  That's because He's God and He's alive.  That's why we have a hope that lies within us.  It's because He's real and He's alive.

I know my thoughts have been scattered in this post but in order for us to serve the Lord faithfully, we need to crucify our flesh.  If we don't crucify our flesh, our walk with God will be inconsistent and we'll struggle in being what Christ wants us to be before this world.  There's no better time than now to determine in our hearts we're going to live for Him.  If we're going to accomplish anything for the Lord, we must do it now.  Time is short and Jesus is coming back soon.  Happy Easter!

"Oh What A Saviour" The Cathedrals

As we celebrate Easter today I have to think of John 3:16 which says that God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten son that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.  Easter is a time to remember the sacrifice that Jesus paid for mankind on Calvary's cross.  He bled and died for our sins.  He was laid in a tomb for three days and then he rose again.  He is alive forevermore.  If God didn't send His son into this world, we would never have the opportunity to know the free pardon of sin.  Thank God for Jesus being willing to lay his life down for the sins of mankind.  Oh what a Saviour He is!

Count Your Blessings

(Ephesians 4:31) "Let all bitterness, and wrath, and anger, and clamour, and evil speaking, be put away from you, with all malice:"

(Philippians 4:8) "Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things."

The reason why so many people have bitterness in their hearts, have hateful attitudes, are cantankerous and always miserable is due to their thought life.  There's an old adage that says "You are what you think."  There's much truth in that.  If you think yourself to be something, before too long you more than likely will be what you're thinking.  If you think yourself sad, then you'll be sad.  If you think yourself defeated, then you'll be defeated.  If you think you don't have the capacity to accomplish anything productive with your life, then you'll live a useless life.  If you think you can't work, then you'll sit on your stool-of-do-nothing and be lacking.  The reason why many Christian people live such defeated lives is simply due to what they allow their minds to dwell upon.  It's tragic.  However, if you think yourself the opposite of those things just mentioned above, then you can live a life of joy and happiness.  In Acts 26:2, the Apostle Paul thought himself happy before King Agrippa.  Why?  Paul chose to be happy.  He wasn't going to be intimidated by standing before Agrippa.  He wasn't going to allow himself to be in a state of defeat.  Happiness is a state of mind.  You will be what you think yourself to be.  I recognize you have to use common sense when it comes to what you think.  If you're disabled and in a wheelchair you have to recognize you have limitations in what you can and cannot perform.  However, a person doesn't have to think themselves defeated.  I recognize that's easier said than done many times.

I know in my own life many of the attitudes I've experienced is simply due to what I've allowed my mind to dwell upon.  There have been times I've had desires for God to grant a request in my life and it didn't work out like I thought it should've.  I would ponder and rationalize the situation in my mind and I would think that something should've been worked out.  In other words, things didn't have to go the direction that they did, according to my way of thinking.  However, that can be foolish thinking.  Dwelling over the past isn't going to help you.  It is wise to reflect upon the past from time to time so we can learn from our mistakes.  However, crying over spilled milk is a waste of time.  Instead of dwelling on failed opportunities, we should mediate upon Philippians 4:8.  There are so many things that we can muse upon that's good and wholesome.  Proverbs 17:22 says that a merry heart doeth good like a medicine.  The way to have a merry heart is to think upon those things that are good, lovely, of virtue, and of good report.  What we ponder in our minds will affect our heart.  Your heart is affected by what you allow your minds to think upon.  We need to remember that what we're thinking will eventually have an impact upon our hearts.  If we want to guard our heart, then we need to watch what we feast our minds upon.

There's an old hymn entitled "Count Your Blessings" that rings true.  There's nothing more greater than to seriously recall and contemplate all the blessings God has bestowed upon us.  If we will recognize how unworthy we are and how good God is to us, then it should overwhelm us how much God has blessed us.  I can only answer for myself.  If I were to take the time to contemplate all the blessings in my life, it would take days upon days upon days on end and I probably still wouldn't scratch the surface.  Anytime we're in a foul mood we need to stop and remember how God has blessed us.  We need to remember the people God's used to bless us.  It's astounding to think about it.  What's so astounding about God's blessings is that He blesses us in spite of us.  God's good to me and I don't deserve it.  Financial Peace counselor Dave Ramsey has it right when he says, "better than I deserve."  I can say the same for myself.  God's good to us.  He's blessed us abundantly and in so many ways.  Anytime you're in a foul mood or you're mad at the world it would be wise to take time to contemplate and add up all the blessings God has blessed you with.  It would revolutionize our lives if we take that hymn to heart.  If we would count our blessings and realize how blessed we are, it would change our perspective about life.  We would have a joyful countenance.  When you're down in the doldrums, just remember how good God is and count your blessings.

Glenn Beck to Exit His Fox News Television Show

(Los Angeles Times.com) Fox News Network has made the decision to pull off Glenn Beck's once-popular Fox News show later this year.  Beck's 5 p.m. program, which had earned scorn from liberals for his criticism of President Obama as well as his devotion to what some would classify as obscure right-wing conspiracy theories, was a top cable show in 2009 and a signpost for the populist "tea party" movement in last year's midterm elections, which dealt a stinging ballot-box rebuke to the White House and Democrats in Congress last year.  However, ratings had plummeted 32% since last year and many advertisers bailed out on Beck.  Beck, a salt-and-pepper-haired longtime radio host who has compared himself to a rodeo clown--increasingly pursued an agenda which some would consider too conspiracy-minded.  He also chafed his bosses at Fox News, who faulted him for spending too much time on his far-flung business operations and not enough time honing his TV presentation.

Both sides cobbled together a diplomatically worded satement Wednesday that noted Beck would "transition-off" his daily program but stressed that the host and Fox News had reached a new deal for the future, as-yet-unspecified projects.  Joel Cheatwood, a senior Fox News executive, was hired away to help run Beck's company, Mercury Radio Arts.  Beyond that both Beck and Fox News declined further comment.  Roger Ailes, the Fox News chairman and chief executive who until recently had overriden doubts about Beck among his subordinates, said in the statement: "Glenn Beck is a powerful communicator, a creative entrepreneur and a true success by anyone's standards."

There was little mistake that this move would take place.  Less than three years after joining Fox News from CNN's Headline News amid a burst of publicity, Beck is being booted off the air.  His sinking ratings fell 32% for the first three months of this year,  It went down from 2.8 million in the fall of 2009 to 1.9 million viewers as of to date, according to the Nielsen Co.   After months of reported friction between the host and Fox News as well as an aggressive advertiser boycott after Beck dubbed President Obama a racist, analysts professed little surprised.  Jeffrey McCall, a professor of media studies at DePauw University, said, "His show had become tired."  "He was spending a lot of time talking in front of his blackboard.  Guests were less frequently involved.  Mcall stated the ratings drop was significant and couldn't be ignored.  McCall continued saying that the advertiser boycott didn't hurt the program as much in terms of dollars as it did in terms of bad publicity.  Beck had become an easy target for Fox News critics to characterize him as representative of the entire channel.

Many executives at Fox News reportedly felt that Beck was never a good fit with the channel, which includes programming with such hosts as Bill O'Reilly and Sean Hannity that appeal to more "mainstream" conservatives.  This divide grew sharper in recent months, as Beck devoted more time to "black helicopter" conspiracy theorists who view government agencies as allied with shadowy business and tech interests determined to manipulate the lives of ordinary people.  Even some fans began to complain that Beck was ripping off anti-government ideas popularized by another popular radio host, Alex Jones.

The program is expected to end sometime this summer, even though an exact date hasn't been announced yet.

UCONN Wins National Championship/The Summation of UK's 2010-11 Season

(USA Today April 5, 2011) On Monday evening third-seeded Connecticut defeated eigth seeded Butler for the national title Monday evening.  Kemba Walker, a 6-1 All-American from Bronx, NY, steered a young Connecticut team that started the season unranked all the way to the NCAA title game vs. Butler on Monday night at Reliant Stadium in Houston.  Connecticut won the title 53-41, handing Butler it's second straight NCAA championship game loss.  Bulter lost to Duke last year 71-69 for the national title.  It was a very low-scoring game.  The Bulldogs (28-10), were held to a title record low 18.8% shooting.  Connecticut's records is 32-9.  Connecticut won it's third national championship under Coach Jim Calhoun.  UCONN won two other titles in 1999 and 2004.  Kemba Walker was named the Final Four's most outstanding player.

I rarely write posts on sports stories, but I do like to recap whenever Kentucky or Louisville achieves a milestone in the NCAA tournament.  Kentucky earned their victory to the first Final Four since 1998 when they beat Utah 78-69 on March 30, 1998.  Even though they lost to Connecticut by a single point, 56-55 in the national semifinal, the Wildcats still had a good season overall considering their struggles during the SEC regular season conference.  During the regular season, the Wildcats lost 6 out of 8 SEC road games.  The 2010-11 Kentucky Wildcats lost four freshmen (John Wall, DeMarcus Cousins, Daniel Orton, Eric Bledsoe), one junior (Patrick Patterson) one sophomore (Darnell Dodson) and one senior (Ramone Harris) from last year's team.  Kentucky had a splendid group of extraordinary freshmen who, in Coach Calipari's first season as Kentucky's head coach, transformed a mediocre, NIT Kentucky team the season before to a 35-3 season which lost to West Virginia in the regional finals last year.  Last year many fans had predicted Kentucky would've made it to the Final Four under John Wall and UK's extraordinary freshmen.  UK's freshmen that year meshed well and had great depth.  This year's team consisted of freshmen Brandon Knight, Doron Lamb, Terrence Jones, senior Josh Harrelson, and juniors Darius Miller and DeAndre Liggins.  One recruit UK counted on for this season, Enes Kanter, was declared ineligible early in the season and even after appealing, the request to reinstate Kanter's eligibility was denied.

This year's UK team didn't possess the depth like last year's team and this year's team was more susceptible to foul trouble.  Kentucky had to rely more upon Harrelson, Miller, and Liggins this season.  All three upperclassmen delivered.  Josh Harrelson had improved tremendously from last season to this season.  Harrelson should be nominated as the most improved player of Kentucky.  After losing to Arkansas, Kentucky regrouped and they started player together more as a team.  As a result, they won the SEC tournament championship and pulled off surprising upsets against no. 1 seeded Ohio State in the Sweet 16 and second-seeded North Carolina in the regional final.  Even though they fell to Connecticut for the second time in the Final Four (UK lost to Connecticut earlier this season in the championship game of the Maui Classic by 17 points), they still had a tremendous season.  Who expected UK to make it to the Final Four this season after losing Wall and Cousins from last year's team?  I didn't expect it.  They have much to be proud of this season considering this year's team wasn't quite the same caliber as last season.

If Kentucky retains some of this year's freshmen, I project that next season UK will be ranked in the preseason top five.  Kentucky should once again be a contender for the national title considering the class of freshmen coming next season.  The new freshmen coming to UK next season are Marquis Teague, Anthony Davis, Kyle Witljer, and Michael Gilchrist.

A Heart of Thanksgiving Will Solve Numerous Problems (Part 2)

I'm going to take time to clarify the points I made in last Sunday's post.  First of all, I want to point out that a grateful heart won't make a person immune to life's troubles.  Being appreciative won't create a utopia in one's life.  Job 14:1 points out that man that is born of a woman is few days and full of trouble.  You will experience troubles in this life, regardless whether you are saved or lost, grateful or ungrateful.  Thankfulness doesn't cause a person to live a trouble-free life.  However, a heart full of thanksgiving will help that individual as they travel through life's journeys.  One thing's for certain, you will face problems in this life.  There's no way of escaping that.  Your attitude and disposition will determine how you will handle the pressures of life.  Troubles and trials will happen.

In the post written last Sunday, I was stating how important it is for parents to instill into their children the importance of being thankful.  I will mention that I'm not a parent nor am I an expert on child rearing.  However, I was once a young child myself and I do know that I wish I was more appreciative growing up.  I do know it's important for parents to teach their children to be thankful.  The truth of the matter is there aren't many parents today, even in Christian homes that can teach their children to be thankful because there are many parents in this generation that are unthankful.  We can spend our time blaming the young people for their unthankful, unappreciative attitudes.  However, the young people have learned to be unthankful by watching their parents at home.  They've watched their parents used their tongue to ridicule the man of God or the brethren in the House of God.  They've watched their parents complain about situations in life at the drop of a hat and watched them dissatisfied with life.   We wonder why young people tend to be unthankful.  They've seen it in their parents.  Parents must set the example and show their children by their actions and attitude that we must be grateful for what the Lord has done for us.  Parents can't complain about the unthankful attitudes of their children if the parents are unthankful themselves.

It's very important that parents teach their children history.  It's important that children know what life was once like years ago.  Why?  Because children need to develop an appreciation for the blessings God's bestowed upon us today.  Children need to understand that people in the past have lived with far less than what we have today.  Many children today can't imagine what life was like without i-pods, i-pads, cell phones, laptops, and the internet, etc.  I'm 40 years old and I can remember what life was like without all the technological advances we enjoy today.  Children need to be aware that it took a lot of creativity, entrepreneurship, and labor for the gadgets and conveniences we enjoy today.  When you take a look at the landscape of America, you're seeing over 400+ years of labor.  Men and women have sacrificed and labored to build the major cities in America.  The Pilgrims and the Puritans came to a wilderness in Massachusetts in 1620 and 1630.  They didn't enjoy nice homes, vehicles, restaurants, etc.  They didn't enjoy a comfortable living like we do today.  We need to teach our young people history so they can understand how blessed they are in this generation.   A sense of thankfulness must be instilled into children.  Parents must lead the way.

As mentioned earlier, a heart of thanksgiving won't produce a bed of roses in one's life.  Life is full of problems.  You'll experience trials and heartaches regardless of how thankful you may be.  There are scores of testimonies of people who went through the fire but they kept their eyes on the Lord and they were grateful.  A heart of thanksgiving won't change your circumstances.  However, it will change you.  It will help you as you go through trials.  Proverbs 3:5 says lean not upon thy own understanding.  We must understand that we will go through trials in life and won't understand everything.  Nevertheless, we must keep our hearts and minds pure and trust in Him.  We need to understand God knows best.  Sometimes that can be difficult.  We try to utilize our own reasoning to figure out God's ways.  That's something we can't always do.  God's ways are higher than our ways.  We must trust Him and maintain a heart of thanksgiving.  I Thessalonians 5:18 says in everything we are to give thanks.  That's the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you.  God wants us to give thanks in everything.  Married or unmarried we are to give thanks.  Whether or not we have five children or no children we are to give thanks.  When we are in a trial we are to give thanks.  If we are employed or have just lost our job we are to give thanks.  Philippians 4:11 says that whatsoever state we are in we are to be content.  You can't be content unless you're thankful.  If you possess an ungrateful heart then you won't be content.

We are all going to suffer in this life.  We're going to fight battles.  If we're one of God's children and we live Godly in Christ Jesus, we'll suffer persecution.  That's life.   People experience troubles regardless whether they're saved or lost.  However, those that are saved have the potential to be thankful.  We must take time to remember what God's done for us.  We need to understand God's goodness in our lives.  More important than that, we must understand how unworthy we are of God's goodness and grace.  If we take time to ponder how unworthy and undeserving we are and that we deserve hell, it should produce in our hearts gratitude towards God.  When we recognize how sorry we are as humans and how we fall short of God's grace, it should produce a heart of gratefulness towards God knowing that he loves us and is merciful toward us in spite of our shortcomings.  I'm thankful God's mercies are renewed every day.  I'm thankful God's good to us in spite of us.  We should be grateful that God doesn't throw us away due to our ungrateful attitudes.   God's been good to us and it hurts God knowing what He's done for us and we allow ourselves to be unthankful.

We also need to understand that God never makes a mistake.  God knows what he's doing.  God wants the best for us.  Many times we don't understand that.  Our perception of what's best for our lives is different than what God knows is best for us.  We'll experience trials that we won't understand.  There are women that are married that are unable to bear children.  Some have had difficult times in understanding why they're not able to bear children.  Sometimes they question God and don't understand what's taking place in their lives.  Sadly, there have been some that have become bitter as a result of God not granting them the desires of their heart.  There will be times we have desires that we expect God to grant us and he doesn't necessarily answer our prayers the way we desire for Him to.  God doesn't always grant us some of the specific prayer requests we petition to God.  However, God's not out to hurt nor destroy us.  Sometimes it's not God's will that he grant those particular requests.  Other times it may be an issue of God's timing.  There are other times God wants us to draw closer to him and trust in him.  Whatever the issue may be, we must not allow ourselves to become bitter because God didn't grant us the desires we so desperately wanted.  I do recognize that's easier said than done.  I've failed miserably in that area myself.  Many people have struggled with being thankful and content with God's will for their lives.  However, if we'll trust God and maintain a heart of thanksgiving, it will help us to endure and go through the trials that we face in life.  A heart of thanksgiving will prevent us from becoming bitter.  I heard someone say once that trials will either make you bitter or better.  If we take our eyes off the Lord and fail to maintain a thankful heart, then we'll become bitter.  We must trust him and purpose in our hearts that we're going to be thankful towards God regardless what life may bring us.
