Florence Beatrice Smith Price (1887–1953) - Encyclopedia of Arkansas
Florence Smith was born to James H. Smith and Florence Gulliver Smith on April 9, 1887 in Little Rock, Arkansas. Her father was a dentist in Little Rock and her mother taught piano and and worked as a schoolteacher and businesswoman. She was the first African American female composer to have a symphonic composition performed by a major American symphony orchestra. The Chicago Symphony Orchestra performed her "Symphony in E Minor" on June 15, 1933, under the direction of Frederick Stock.
