Poll: 51% Oppose Government Promoting Traditional Values, 45% Support
According to a Gallup 51% of Americans recently stated that they believed the government shouldn't be promoting traditional values whereas 45% stated that they believed the government should be promoting traditional values. That 45% also includes a plurality of women. Many of those who agree that the government should be promoting traditional values claim to be Christians. Also 53% of those ages 55 and older agree the government should be promoting traditional values whereas 34% of those 18-34 agree. Gallup also found that an increasing number of people who don't believe the government should promote traditional values have become increasingly liberal on a wide range of social issues. The percentage of people who claim to be socially liberal on a wide range of social issues has matched and exceeded those who claim to be more traditional and moral values. Those who claim to uphold socially liberal values tend to vote Democrat whereas those who favor the government promoting traditional values tend to vote Republican.
You can thank the influence of the media, academia, and social networking for the thinking of many modern day Americans when it comes to the socially liberal view on values.
